Advent Calendars are an old tradition and todays calendars bear little resemblance to the ones used way back in history. The tradition appears to have started in Europe and when you trace the origins back in history it is very interesting. One old version often involved someone using a piece of chalk to mark a board and opening windows with hidden sweets behind for the twenty four days of December.
The tradition of Advent Calendars seems to have died out during the second world war probably due to the prevailing circumstances rather than a lack of wanting to keep the tradition alive. Advent Calendars thankfully revived in the post war era and there are now many modern versions.
The Principle of the Advent Calendar is that starting on the 1st of December, children open a window every day until Christmas Eve. There are currently many different types of calendar from the basic ones where you just open a window to reveal a date, to those containing candy to permanent structures designed to be used year in and year out.
The Lego City Advent Calendar has proved to be a big hit with children. Its popularity may be because it offers a new twist on an old tradition. Children get huge entertainment value from building the calendar and discovering the hidden items behind each window every day. There are various sets each based on a particular Lego theme. The idea is to build something small every day in the run up to Christmas. The set can be used again and again each year.
The Lego pieces are also compatible with other Lego sets so could be used all year with existing sets but a lot of Parents say they prefer to pack it away to use the following Christmas so that peices do not get lost as once Christmas comes children are bound to be caught up in the new toys and presents.
There are several Lego Advent Calendars. So which one will appeal to your child. There are two City Advent Calendars, the 2824 and the 7687 and both have 271 peices. Then there is a Lego Castle set Advent Calendar, a Lego Pirates advent calendar and a Lego Kingdoms exclusive Set Advent Calendar which is new this year. In addition there is a Playmobil version for younger children.
So if you want to build up the excitement factor for your child on the days leading up to Christmas be sure to take a look at Lego’s range of cool Advent Calendars.
