Advent Calendars are an old tradition and  todays calendars bear little resemblance to the ones used way back in history.  The tradition appears to have started in Europe and when you trace the origins back in history it is very interesting.  One old version often involved someone using a piece of chalk to mark a board and opening windows with hidden sweets behind for the twenty four days of December.
